The end of Zaccharie Risacher's time with the Atlanta Hawks was rough. He went from being a key piece of their core to being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in just two years. Not ideal for a player who was drafted with the first overall pick in 2024.
Zaccharie Risacher's standing with the Hawks plummeted quickly
He found himself in trade rumors around the trade deadline last season, including with the Mavs, and his role shrank significantly. These were the initial signs that the Hawks' belief in him was fading.
Risacher went from playing 25 minutes per game in October and November as one of the Hawks' starting wings to just 18.0 minutes per game in March and April as a player off the bench (he only started in one game during these two months).
The former No. 1 overall pick's role was diminishing more by the day, and he hit rock bottom during the 2026 NBA Playoffs. Risacher was a DNP-CD by Quin Snyder in three of Atlanta's six first-round games against the New York Knicks. This was the first time he had been benched in his entire NBA career.
Dallas is actually prioritizing him — unlike Atlanta
Risacher was frustrated with his role and how things transpired in Atlanta, but Dallas will give him the fresh start that he needs after two underwhelming seasons with the team that drafted him. The Mavericks can give him what the Hawks no longer would: faith that he can reach his full potential and a featured role in their young core.
"When I got them (Masai Ujiri, Dusty May, and Mike Schmitz) on the phone after I got traded, that's when I knew they were super excited about getting me," Risacher said. "It's been huge for me too. Being able to see that I'm going to be part of an organization where they want me to be here and to succeed too. That play a big role, and that's big motivation for me. And I feel like being in that position, it's the best thing that could happen to me, and I'm super blessed to be part of this team."
The Mavericks targeted Risacher
Risacher's feelings on the Mavs' excitement to get him line up with the report surrounding the time of the trade that indicated Dallas initiated this deal. The Mavericks weren't involved in this deal to help Lu Dort get to Atlanta. They were the ones who targeted Risacher, and the other pieces fell into place.
Dallas' belief in the Frenchman was completely different from the end of his time with the Hawks, as the Hawks punted on him after just two seasons. He was told to shrug off the trade rumors that he was hearing of before getting moved, but getting benched less than two years after getting drafted with the first pick is a clear sign that things are a little murky.
Dallas is the change of scenery he needed
A huge reason that the Mavericks have a great chance to get the best out of Risacher is the fact that expectations are not sky-high anymore. He couldn't fully win over fans in Atlanta because they always expected him to perform like a top pick.
It was quickly apparent that it was going to take time for him to develop, but the Hawks got impatient and moved on. Dallas took advantage of this and traded Ryan Nembhard and a second-round pick to acquire him.
Not only was this a steal for the Mavericks; it was also a steal for Zaccharie Risacher. He's joining a franchise that prioritizes him and his future. Two things that the Hawks no longer did.
