The Dallas Mavericks' point guard rotation remains shaky heading into training camp later this week. Dallas needs more ball-handling, playmaking, and reliability behind Kyrie Irving as he returns from a torn ACL, but the team didn't address this need adequately this summer.
Instead, they prioritized wing depth. The Mavericks have 10 players between 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-9 on the roster, and with only three true point guards — Marcus Sasser, Irving, and Sergio De Larrea — Dallas clearly needs more guards.
Guard play is extremely important to success in the NBA, and the Mavs' thin backcourt is one of the many reasons they struggled so much last season. They didn't add enough insurance behind Irving to get through his year-long absence, and they paid for it.
Ryan Nembhard is exactly who Dallas needs
This is why signing Ryan Nembhard would make so much sense right now after news broke that he is expected to be waived by the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday. He brings everything that they need in a backup point guard. Nemby constantly makes the right play, is a decent 3-point shooter, and makes everyone around him better. He also has strong chemistry with Cooper Flagg and is familiar with many players on the roster.
These things would make a Mavericks reunion such a natural fit for both sides, as he spent all of his rookie year in Dallas. Nembhard would be able to pick up where he left off and have a fresh start to his career with the Mavericks. Unfortunately, this move is unrealistic.
Nembhard's return is unrealistic
The Mavericks don't have the roster space to sign him. Dallas' 15-man roster is full, and so are their three two-way spots. Even if they wanted to sign Nembhard, they'd have to waive someone.
Cutting someone to sign Nembhard seems unlikely, especially since they bought out Klay Thompson earlier this summer, and the Mavs better hope that they can get enough playmaking from Irving, Sasser, De Larrea, and Cooper Flagg to hold them over.
Flagg is poised to play some point guard again despite the growing pains he underwent while playing this position last season, but Sasser and De Larrea's looming impacts are a bit up in the air. De Larrea is a 20-year-old rookie, while Sasser has played just 15.8 minutes per game through his first three seasons in the NBA and has the skill set of a score-first shooting guard rather than a floor general.
Nembhard would be an ideal addition to this Mavericks backcourt, especially on another two-way contract, as it would be a low-risk move that gives them the guard they need to steady the offense and build upon the youth movement they started last season. He has already shown that he can be productive in Dallas, but their jam-packed roster makes a reunion a long shot.
